Castle Stalker Guide
Castle Stalker: A Scottish Icon on the Water's Edge Guide
Prepare to be captivated by Castle Stalker, a picturesque tower house dramatically set on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, near Oban. This iconic Scottish castle, seemingly floating on the water, offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into Scotland's turbulent past. Whether you're a history buff, a photography enthusiast, or simply seeking a stunning landscape, Castle Stalker promises an unforgettable experience. The history of Castle Stalker is a tapestry woven with clan feuds and royal intrigue. The islet was first fortified in the 1320s by the MacDougalls of Lorn, then passed to the Stewarts in the 1380s. The castle itself, as it stands today, was built in the 1440s by Sir John Stewart, an illegitimate son of the Lord of Lorn. It changed hands between the Stewarts and the Campbells several times, often through violent means. Famously, King James IV visited the castle in 1497. The castle fell into disrepair but was lovingly restored in the 20th century by the Stewart Allward family, who still own it today. While you can't typically enter the castle without a pre-booked tour (check their website for availability), the real magic lies in admiring it from afar. Capture stunning photographs from the roadside, especially during sunset when the light paints the castle in golden hues. Consider a boat trip on Loch Laich for a unique perspective. The surrounding area offers excellent walking trails, allowing you to explore the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly linked to the castle, nearby restaurants in Appin and Oban offer delicious Scottish fare, including fresh seafood and traditional dishes like haggis.
